Meet Leo Prinsloo, the South African security expert and former Special Task Force captain who became a global sensation in April 2021, when a dashcam video showed him calmly driving an armored cash vehicle through a hail of gunfire during an attempted cash-in-transit heist in Pretoria. With one hand on the steering wheel and his pistol in the other, Prinsloo outmaneuvered a gang of armed robbers — a display of ice-cold professionalism that drew millions of views and admiration from security professionals around the world.

Leo Prinsloo Career: From the Special Task Force to Security Expert
Prinsloo spent 17 years in the South African Police Service, including 12 years in the elite Special Task Force, where he attained the rank of captain. He applied for the force’s notoriously grueling selection program in 1992, and over the course of his career he trained as a sniper and developed specialist skills in surveillance, bodyguard services, hostage rescue, and counter-insurgency.
After leaving the police in the mid-2000s, he joined the private security sector, where he became a chief instructor and field operative for Fortis Pro-Active Defence Solutions, a South African company specializing in protective and security training.
The 2021 Cash-in-Transit Heist That Made Him Famous
On 22 April 2021, Prinsloo and his partner, Lloyd Mtombeni — who was on only his fourth day on the job — were transporting high-value cargo in a cash-in-transit vehicle in Pretoria when an armed gang ambushed them. Dashcam footage shows Prinsloo steering the vehicle with one hand while holding his pistol in the other, calmly talking his terrified partner through the ordeal as bullets struck the armored truck. His steady driving eventually forced the attackers to give up.
The video was posted online and exploded, racking up millions of views across platforms. It was covered by the BBC, analyzed by Business Insider, and featured on cable news outlets — with Prinsloo himself giving interviews, including one to TimesLIVE, in which he said he knew he could handle the situation.
Fame came with a price: Prinsloo received death threats after the video went viral, and because a police investigation was ongoing, he was initially unable to speak publicly about the details of the incident.
